In order to push myself to stay active with my camera, exercise my creativity, and complete my first ever photo project, I decided to create a challenge for myself. I am committing to myself to capture, process and post thirty black and white photos in thirty days.
I’ve always liked black and white photography because it removes the distraction of color from photos that aren’t meant to capitalize on their colorfulness. In general, I’m not usually looking for colorfulness,. I tend to look for shape, movement, emotion or sentimentality in my images. Generally. So, Black and White seemed to me to be a good choice for my first focused project.
I took this one on a beach near Oceanside, California, while the sun was still high in the sky, which gives the surfer a silhouette effect and washes out the sky. From a processing standpoint, I did not do a ton, but I did decrease the clarity of the water a little to give the whole scene a dreamy effect.
To me, the image symbolizes living a dynamic, heart-felt life with what you have.
